How will I know if I have an infection?

An infection will present as redness, swelling, warmth or firmness of the area. If you experience a fever greater than 102 degrees, please call our office at (563) 557-7000.

When can I take a shower or bath?

You may shower 48 hours after surgery. DO NOT take a tub bath or submerge your wound in water until 7 days after surgery, or otherwise stated by your physician. DO NOT take a bath, Jacuzzi, or go swimming if you have an open, draining wound. If you have drains in place, please follow the bathing instructions provided by your doctor.

What should I do if I have not had a bowel movement within the first 3 days after surgery?

Walking, increasing oral fluid intake, and increasing dietary fiber are recommended to help with bowel movements after surgery. Stool softeners are suggested while using prescription medication for pain control. You may also try 1 dose of MiraLax, or Milk of Magnesia daily. Please call our office at (563) 557-7000 if the interventions listed do not provide relief.
